Golf tournament to benefit Boys & Girls Club

MONTICELLO – The golf tournament has been set up on Sep. 28 at Pine View Golf Course to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of White County.
The scramble will begin with registration and lunch at noon. Then at 1 p.m. a shotgun start will get the inaugural event going.
The four-person teams will include one youth on each team. If a team can’t find a youth, one will be found for it. The cost of the event is $50 for adults and $35 for youth. However, a full team with one youth can sign up for $160 or $100 for a team of all youth.
The youth will get some advantages during the scramble that will be announced at the tournament.
Sponsors are also being sought. Their donation will be recognized by signs: $100 for a large sign, $50 for a medium sign and $25 for a small sign. Prizes are also desired for the raffle. Sponsors will get a discount for sponsoring a team as well.
The Boys and Girls Club of White County needs to raise $35,000 before it can open its doors.
Contact Bill Madden at (574) 583-4494 to sign up a team and for more information.

14th Annual Scrabble set for Sept. 30

MONTICELLO – The 14th Annual Scrabble Fun(d) Tournament has been scheduled for Sept. 30, 6:30 p.m., at the American Legion on Washington Street in East Monticello.
The annual tournament is the major fundraiser for the Literacy Volunteers of White County. This year the organization’s need is great because the GED test is changing to another test for people to acquire their high school education.
There is one change to the tournament this year. Instead of 30 minutes to complete the Scrabble board, teams will only be given 20 minutes. The change came about to end the competition before 8 p.m. so that contestants don’t miss Dancing With The Stars on television.
The night of fun also includes a raffle of many items donated by local businesses.  Some are silent auction items, like a night at the Lighthouse Lodge Bed and Breakfast.
Teams are limited to two to six members. However, individuals can sign up and they will be assigned to a smaller team. To sign up, call (574) 583-0789 or come to the event.

Where can children study for a couple of hours after school and they have some fun for a couple of hours without parents having to watch over them? Nowhere right now, but they will in October when the Boys & Girls Club of White County begins at Meadowlawn Elementary School, if everything goes as planned.
In the middle of July, the club was accepted as a branch of the Lyn Treece Boys and Girls Club of Tippecanoe County. The following week the club received its first significant donation. Chris and Heather Overmeyer donated $10,000 and became the first founder of the club.
"We’re happy to have any donation," said organizer Jennifer Ousley. "You can fund a child for $10."
And donations is what the club needs before it can open its doors in October. "We must raise $35,000 before we can open the door," said Ousley. (Read more in the next issue the Monticello Magazine, which will come out in September)

The summer issue of Monticello Magazine is now online at www.monticellomagazine.com. Future issues of the magazine will be posted on the website a month after publication for those people who can't afford to purchase it or subscribe to it. Only one person didn't like the move, because he has a subscription. However, some people still prefer paper over electronic.
