Mistake in History of Monticello

A reader brought to my attention that I made four mistakes on Page 76. I put Julie in place of Lois in paragraph two and three. The mistake is somewhat obvious, but I told her I will correct it on the reprint of the book. She thinks I shouldn't even put the story in the reprint because it was so long ago. I told her that it was a history book and that's where it should go. She was not happy with my answer, but it's one of those truths that hurt. I'm truly sorry for the mistakes. I'd correct them with a pen and ink, but each book is sealed with plastic, which is why I'm not going there. I also can't afford to toss them in the trash.

The Lighthouse Lodge B&B on Lake Shafer hosted their first wedding ceremony of 2013 this past weekend. The happy couple was Scott & Tina Hall from Monon. The bride and groom and the parents, relatives and bridesmaids & groomsmen stayed overnight at the lodge. Bonnie Triplett did the reception dinner for 85 guests; they had a delicious pork roast that everyone loved. Paula Lantz did the ceremony on the large deck at the lodge. A DJ played until midnight. If you're interested in doing a wedding at the Lighthouse Lodge, check out their website: www.thelighthouselodge.com.

Fire in Idaville

The Idaville fire on U.S. 24 this morning gutted the interior of Randy Leonard's home. Fortunately, nobody was home at the time. His wife was at the hospital instead giving birth to a child via C-section. They arrived at the scene after the fire was out. Departments from Idaville, Buffalo and Monticello responded. Chief Scott Simons of the Idaville FD saw a car in front of the house and assumed someone was inside. He and others went inside, but found nobody. Thanks to the passerby who called 911 and reported the fire.

Success for Monticello Boys & Girls Club

Thanks to everyone who participated in the $ell-abration on Saturday. It raised more than $1,000 for the Monticello Boys & Girls Club. I had seven people purchase subscriptions to Monticello Magazine, so I was quite satisfied with it. Plus, I got about 15 vendors who will be featured in the magazine this year. www.maddenpublishing.net

$ell-abration!

Hope to see you at the $ell-abration tomorrow (Saturday) at Roosevelt Middle School between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. There will be more than 50 vendors and the profits from booth rental go to the proposed Monticello Boys & Girls Club.

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

The Sell-abration is set for Saturday, 9-3, at the Roosevelt Middle School gyms. It is a fundraiser for the proposed Boys & Girls Club, so come out and see what some 60 vendors have to offer. There will be plenty of variety. The new History of Monticello and Monticello Magazine will be on sale there as well.
The new school in Reynolds called the Crossing, which is coming in August, will be looking for volunteers to help them out. A volunteer form can be found at their website. You will have to go through a limited background check as they don't hire someone with a record. The Literacy Volunteers of White County will be helping out the new school as well. "We need community support and would like to bring in as many volunteers as we can," said Megan Bailey, director of operations.

Spring is finally here and if you're planning a wedding, the Lighthouse Lodge B&B can provide you will a wonderful place with a lakeview! They have a large deck overlooking Lake Shafer in which wedding ceremonies can be held. And if spring rains come, the wedding can be taken inside, if necessary. They can also provide catering. Then after the wedding, you only have to climb a set of stairs to your honeymoon suite. Your guests can stay in our other rooms or cottages. You can reserve the whole facility, if you want, and they are pet friendly. While they may be a bed and breakfast, we can provide all your meals, if you wish. In any case, their job is to make your wedding a memorable one. Monticello Magazine recommends the Lighthouse Lodge B&B for your lodging and wedding needs.
The White County Tourism approved lots of money this morning to go to many entities in the county to bring more visitors to White County. They approved $1,000 to the Monon Festival on June 1 and $800 to the Buffalo Daze on June 8. They also approved $1,000 for the Spirit of Monticello Festival on the last weekend of June this year. Then they approved $1,000 for the Wolcott Festival on July 4th. They also approved $1,500 to Ken Prieboy for three car shows in the county this summer. Then they approved. They also approved $1,000 to the Rotary Club of Monticello for their new event called the Cardboard Boat Regada on the last Saturday in July. They approved all of them with one vote. Then they approved $2,085 to Burnettsville for their playground. They also approved $32,533.90 for construction of the new fields in northwest Monticello being constructed by Brad Smock. Then they gave away $3,082 to Jim Calhoun of the Monticello Softball Association for nets for safety reasons. Finally, they approved $750 to Mike Triplett of the Lighthouse Lodge B&B to spend on Google adwords to promote White County to tourists. They also will allow the Monticello Kiwanis to staff the Welcome building near Indiana Beach for tourists to visit. They decided to allow Dave Jordan to get their White County festival brochure printed in Vietnam for a cheaper price (6 cents) that what it could be printed here for ($1), according to secretary Joe Crivello. Jordan has some things made in Vietnam.
